The big old green Timken boiler is one I worked on a few years ago in this highly unusual one pipe gravity hot water system that had pumps added, with some rads split off on a monoflow zone. A good cleaning and tuning with new pilot assembly, powerpile and gas regulator got the boiler combustion efficiency up to about 81.5% with the atmospheric burner. Cutting the flow rate in the one pipe gravity system got that zone finally working and putting in a flow check pump took care of the uncontrolled heating of the other zone.
The owner decided to upgrade to a Prestige 110 with Smart 40 indirect with new circs, etc. as needed, this past fall. For a little extra money, we convinced them to leave the old boiler in place as a back-up with gravity flow and no electricity needed. In case of a power failure, or a failure of the new boiler, all the owner has to do is flip a switch and open a valve and he has heat.
Unfortunately we found out that it works because the control board for the Prestige somehow got through production without getting programmed, so the Prestige was not fully functional to handle our 20 below temps several weeks ago. A control board swap out and reprogrammaing and all is very well, with the savings on the fuel bills already starting to roll in.
