Dimension \"a\" question per a \"drop header\"
Steamhead (in transit)
Member Posts: 6,688
the dimension almost all boiler makers want for the height of the risers to the header is 24-inches above the highest permissible water level. This is to keep water from getting into the header.
Bob, that 24 inches only applies to the risers. Once they've reached this height (and preferably higher if you can manage it), they can drop pretty much to the top of the boiler if needed. This is the way to connect to any low-hanging steam mains you may have.

I'm over here in Chi-Town and here drop headers are never used. My question is about your Dimension "A" with this type of header, I'm assuming it's from the water-line to the bottom of the Drop- header and is 28" still your magic number?0 -
Drop headers skew the "A" dimension, and make it a non-issue really. The idea of the 28 inches is to give gravity time to fight velocity and prevent water from entering the steam main.
A dropped header slows down the steam and prevents water entering the main.
So to answer your question,.. you dont really need to keep the "A" dimension of the risers going into the drop.

I think I misunderstood the question, and my answer may be confusing.
In an attempt to clarify,...
The "A" Dimension when looking for the "lowest steam carrying pipe" is something you measure at the end of the steam main, and the dropped header would not be included in the measurement.

Here is a random picture I took off google to help explain my question. I also have a part 2 to the question0 -
Thank you Frank,
that was kinda what I was waiting for.
24" is the minimum straight-up, then the "drop" can really be as much as you want/boiler permitting?

Yes
I wouldn't get too close to the waterline though.

Never say never....
I've got one in Chi-town and maybe more to come and a bunch west of Chicago!
You probably want some height for the header above the water line, should you need to drain alot of water out of the header in a hurry if the boiler surges....the taller equalizer of a higher header should give you more room for the water to collect as it reenters the boiler. This is probably not much of an issue on a single zone system since the boiler shouldn't surge like from a zone valve opening.

Drop headers have gotten me out of many jams..........
even without the 28"s and the drop header....very low crawl space...and a boiler replacement where all the old piping was covered in asbestos and they weren't paying to touch it....AND.......WE NEEDED THE MONEY!!!!!!!!!!!!Mad Dog
