B & G IAS
in the book pumping away, dan holohan recommends a b&g ias. the ias-1 1/2 is the smallest recommended for a steel comp tank. can this be reduced in size or run full size?0 -
Actually they are not a fat spot in the road..
like air scoops. If you look inside, they have two chambers with an orifice between them. They probably increase the water velocity through the orifice to reduce pressure to help water come out of solution. I found the IAS to be much more effective than air scoops...and really make fancy microbubble air separators unnecessary in most systems.

I stand (or sit) corrected
but they really do work alot better than air scoops.

Taco Vortech
You might want to look at the Taco Vortech air separator.

Whatever,,,they work
Six years ago I put in an IAS [18 inches before the circulator , about as much distance after the boiler outlet, to allow laminar flows] and also the air-trol at the expansion tank.
Wow! What a difference.
My tank stopped being an unwanted 30 gallon of hot water that rotted the foodstuffs in the kitchen shelves above it. The tank remains cool and the system water never exchanges with the tank water. The air remaining after fill purging just slowly disappears into the tank and the pump hums quietly.
But, I swear it looked just like an empty fat wide spot in the line. I did not see two chambers. But, it works, well.0
