what's the protocol?
Nice to see an increasing number of solar installs here on the Wall.
What if anything are you suggesting to customers regarding lightning protection?
Thanks.0 -
Protection for
the solar control, a surge protector that wires in the sensor line, is available from Caleffi.
In some areas they want the array grounded via a copper rod and a specific gauge of wire. I believe Wisconsin FOCUS requires grounding.
I don't see anything in the 2006 IAPMO Uniform Solar Code. It could be a state by state requirement.

Any idea what the CALEFFI Part number would be? I got on their Web Site but couldn't find it. I'm trying to find a distributer here in NH. I know that the RESOL's Diff Controller is identical to CALEFFI. I'm also trying to find a RESOL distributor in my area. Thanks

The number
for the collector sensor lightning protector is NA15005.
The Caleffi I-Solar control is built for us by Resol. The Caleffi branded ones do have some unique and exclusive features, variable speed outputs, V-bus on all, etc.
Check the Caleffi US website for distribution in your area. Any problems getting product, or questions let me know.

National Lightning protection code
Standard NFPA 780
What it covers and whether Solar arrays are required to be protected I do not know. I just copied the standard listing from an Electrical web site.

Hot Rod,
Back in December, you gave me the tel Numer of your supplier. His name was Rex and his number was 414-238-2360. Is that still a good name and number? I'll probably call him to order a surge protector. I like your tea cup.

Hi Hot Rod,
I gave Rex a call and because I'm a homeowner and not a contractor, he said he couldn't help me. He gave me the name of a company in Vermont. I tried sending them an E-mail and got no response. I guess I'll just have to keep looking. Thanks.

Even if not required
in your area, dont it make sense. You now have a high point with metal on
the roof.
When my satelite dish was installed it has copper running down from it, bonded
to my ground rods.
Maybe DirectTV knows something.

Hot rod,
Do you want me to call you there? Rex told me that you worked there. I'm interested in the cost and I know typically you don't give prices in this forum.

Did you get a chance to ship it? If you did, do you have a tracking number? Thanks for your help.

It's on the way
My gal shipped it, I'm out of town. I find out if it went snail mail or UPS.
