A day with \"The Champ\" (GrandPAH)

Just back from a long weekend Irish wake where we celebrated a deceased relative and mat many who we've never known previously. Frankfort, KY - on a big farm a-way out in the country. It was a hoot!

Yesterday we scooted into Louisville to tour the city and the baseball bat factory.

This morning, it was the Muhammad Ali Center. The Champ. No matter your views or feelings about him, his legacy is astounding. His training center in PA was north of here & my brother (and some friends of his) were visiting the camp (many years ago) when The Champ ran into them and invited them into his home for lunch with his family. I remember my brother telling me that when he sat down, Muhammad made him feel like he was there alone - just the two of them speaking - and that each of them came away feeling just like that.

There were some painfull memories laid open today as we toured this astounding facility: the Vietnam War issues and, of course, the racial divide that nearly tore this country apart. However, once past those zones, a million memories of The Champ's journey through life with an amazing array of video footage that brought back a ton of pleasant memories.

If you ever get down that way, it's a not-to-be-missed visit with history and the legacy of The Champ.

The rest of Louisville rocks too!

    Louisville

Never stopped in but drove thru many times on my way to Nashville to visit my sis. I see (History Channel Rocks!) they have templates of every bat they ever made at the Luisville Slugger plant. It's kinda cool that a modern pro can order the exact same bat "The Babe" used if he had the arms for it.

Being 1/4 Irish and damn proud of it, I can relate to the Irish wake thing. It has made me realize that celebrating the deceased's life beats the hell out of mourning their death. God bless my long departed Irish Gram. She was as tough and hard drinking as any Irishman I've come across. Sweet as pie to us young un's too! County Connemora, I believe. I'd love to go there someday and check up on the Sullivans.

    Cassius Clay.

    The Champ !

Was one of my sports hero's as a kid. His interviews with Howard Cossel were pure entertainment.

I watched a rerun of one of his fights and even today his talent showed thru. It was the first time he had used the rope-a-dope. Arguably the best fighter.

At several stations, you can sit in front of a large screen plasma TV and replay entire fights. Lots of media coverage and sensory overload! We had three hours to spare, which isn't nearly enough time. Next time, we're devoting an entire day.
