Looks good, but are those supply and return sensors located on the right part of the piping?
Thanks,
Jim

primary secondary piping with weil mclain ultra PHD
In the past we have had issues with how we piped our low mass boilers, but since i read dan holohans books life has been much easier and we have no more air trouble. here is a pic.0 -

Great work Chuck, any pics of the boiler? I'm looking to install an Ultra in the near future, thanks0 -
Nice to hear, Chuck.
Thanks for the photo. Nice work!Retired and loving it.0 -

We have had great results with the ultra boilers. The only issue that we had was with the new control board, which is an easy fix. In years past we installed some modulating teledyne boilers which gave us nothing but trouble. The tech service was as bad as the boiler. But live and learn and find what works best for you.0 -

sensor location
Jim I do beleive that the sensors are located per manufacturer specifications. However I'll let you know as soon as i get a chance.

pex barrier
Charlie, The wirsbo tubing absolutely has an oxygen barrier. We have heard of major issues with low mass boilers and the wrong tubing. I would not want to remove all of the tubing in a system like this one, I think we have over a mile of tubing throughout the house.

Ultra
Couple of things.First the sensor locations are incorrect. They should be on your primary loop. Supply sensor just after the supply tee and the return sensor just before the return tee. It gives a distance in the manual but I don't have one in front of me to have an exact answer. There are already sensors internal to the boiler for the boiler supply and return.
Secondly that is an Ultra series 3 with the U control. PHD was series 2 and a whole different monster. So far the series 3 is a better overall system but a little more touchy with popping up error codes.

Expansion Tank Mounting
Why is your expansion tank mounted sideways? The installation instructions clearly show that it is to be mounted vertically and state "Mount vertically only." The air valve is supposed to be on the downward side. At one time I called the company and they verified this information.0 -
expansion tank positioning
Erich, This is from the watts installation instructions. Perhaps other brands have different requirements.
Series ET
Non-Potable Water Expansion Tanks for Hot
Water Heating Boilers and Systems
Models ET-15, ET-30, ET-60, ET-90
Series ET nonpotable water expansion tanks are designed
to absorb the increased volume of water created
when the hot water boiler is heated and keep the system
pressure below the relief setting of the relief valve. Series
ET is a pre-pressurized steel tank with an expansion
membrane that prevents contact of the water with the air
in the tank. This prevents loss of air to the water and
ensures long and trouble-free life for the system.
Note: Watts ET Series non-potable water expansion tank may
be installed in a tee or any other suitable tapping in the heating
system and can be installed in a vertical or horizontal position.0 -
Therm-X-Trol
Chuck, your image shows a Therm-X-Trol expansion tank. That tank is made by Amtrol and the instructions call for a vertical mounting.0 -
That tank would happen to be the plumbers tank. The gray larger Watts tank would be the one that I installed.0
