Another Gas-Fired Intrepid Install (Gordo & Steamhead)

I guess you are liking those Slantfins. Nice low waterline and a big offset steam chamber. The company has been great to work with. A suggestion on the low pressure gage...put an isolation valve on it so you can protect it when you are checking out other controls or flooding the boiler. High pressure will take it out....you probably don't need to ask me how I know!
I am hoping to yank a couple of nightmares installed a few years ago and put in a pair of Slantfins. I also hope to have the modulating input Intrepid running in a week or two. We are going to be probably ordering the modulating burner control Monday.
Just a quick idea to share....Some of the modulating controls we have found allow you to modulate steam pressure on outdoor reset. Imagine matching up an orifice vapor system in a big old building with that!
Also, Weishaupt has low input 10 to 1 modulating burners available. Another burner option looks like it is opening up and, their US headquarters is in Chicago...Which is good for me.
First Callefi moved in, then Wilo, and now Weishaupt. Chicago is looking to be a really good place to be if you are doing hydronics.

This is a Dunham \"Home Heating System\"
which is Vapor without a Return Trap. It has 603 square feet of radiation, mostly American Murray convectors, plus a couple radiators that were added later.
The old Burnham IN10 was rated 812 square feet- an IN8 would have been plenty. It developed a hole above the waterline. Note the mix of iron and copper steam piping.

The New Slant/Fin Intrepid TR-40
with Midco EC-300 power gas burner, rated 608 square feet. We used a new-old-stock Vaporstat on this one since all we have is a "B" dimension to get the water to return. It's hard to see in the pic, but the low-pressure gauge reads 6 inches of water column. That's roughly 3 ounces, and the system was fully heated at that moment.
We also updated the venting to Gorton #2s. This system has a single 3-inch main that wraps around the house. A single crossover trap didn't cut it.
Enjoy!

Here is a Slightly Better Picture
of the low pressure gauge at 2 1/2 or so inches of water with all convectors heating.

Frank....
and Gordo. Nice work! I like the dual gauges.
One thing though. Is there any way to post those pictures slightly larger? I could really appreciate more detail.

I'll be happy
to e-mail the full-size ones. We try to keep them smaller when we post them, since some of us still use dial-up Net access, and the full-size pics take forever to download.

I'd love....

Nice
Nice work Frank and Gordo. I have never seen that type of vapor-stat. You will have to enlighten me. The burner is also a new one on me.
I have to meet an engineer in Baltimore one day next week. We are still working out the exact date but may be Thursday or Friday. I would love to meet you two for lunch if you can free up. -DF

Thanks, Dan!
The EC is Midco's latest residential power burner. It's relatively quiet and tunes up nicely.
The older Vaporstats seem to be more accurate than newer ones. On a system with a Return Trap or an oversized "B" dimension it's not such a big deal, but we played it safe on this job which had neither.
Friday would be better for us.

nice job never installed an intrepid with a midco though if i may ask what was the combustion efficincy at the time of set up?0 -
Thanks, Boilerpro
Yes, the Intrepid is nice, esp. with that 3" tapping. One puts a bushing in that at their peril!
We are looking forward to your pictures and results with the modulating controls.

Question...
Steamhead and BoilerPro....Can the Intrepid be changed to gas? There is no mention on the Slantfin site, but what is your experience...knowledge....of this?
Just trying to collect info for the future replacement...hopefully the distant future, but you never know!
EDIT: Thanks for the info Steamhead...I'll put it in my file...0 -
Yes it can
the Intrepid/Midco EC setup we have installed is a fully factory-certified and factory-supported configuration. The Intrepid is also certified with the Carlin EZ-Gas and HeatWise SU power gas burners, as well as the usual Beckett, Carlin and Riello oil burners.
I agree they need to update their site regarding this.

Another interesting application is...
that it is also certified for Dual Fuel. That could be really nice for you guys out East.

As promised
this one ended up at 80.5%... with that said, the draft and therefore the stack temp were higher than we liked, but we had to get the heat on. This is an extremely powerful chimney! We'll be going back to fix some bad traps and will revisit it then.

extra tee
I like to put a 1/4 plugged tee after the little 1/4 turn shutoff upstream of the gauge, the little valve leaks a bit and the open tee means the expensive pressuretrol never sees too high a pressure during a test.0 -
Nice !
Do you like the Intrepid better than the 8 series?Or is it an availability issue? Is the S/F approved with the EZ gas?To learn more about this professional, click here to visit their ad in Find A Contractor.0 -
We like them both
but the G8 availability has been iffy. The Intrepid is certified with the EZ-Gas and HeatWise SU burners as well as the Midco EC.

THANK YOU FROM SLANT/FIN
Thanks to all for their nice comments on the Intrepid Boiler. The heat exchanger design is pretty robust and very different which allows it to adapt to most burners. Steamhead and Gordo...thanks to you both for the great work that you do.
Hope to see you both soon,
Bob Flanagan
