Boiler Hole
[Deleted User]
Though I am not ASME certified I am also far from being faint of heart. I removed the left front side of the boiler (this is also the water feed side) and found a "silver dollar" sized hole in the tubing plate, above the tubes. Now the patch job. What are the suggestions? I'm looking for both short term and long term solutions. Any information would be appreciated. I assure you I am more than capable, just new to steam heat.
Thanks

Boiler hole
I have a 17 year old Rite Boiler, 995,000 B.T.U that has a hole in it due to fresh water feed. I see that "dope" is not recommended for the repair. What is a good repair that will not contaminate the water? I have not opened it up yet so I am unaware of the size of the hole, but from the amount of steam coming out of the chimney I'm guessing it is a pretty decent size. Thanks0 -
Is this
a steel or cast-iron boiler?

I'm not really sure, but since it has steel tubes I'm going to call it a steel boiler.0 -

It's steel
and this type of repair is not for the faint of heart, or for anyone not ASME certified. Tell us where you are, I bet someone here can either handle the job or can put you onto the right company.

Get a certified welder or replace the boiler. I vote for a new boiler. Holes like that are like cockroaches , if you see one you have a thousand under the surface waiting for the lights to go out.Cost is what you spend , value is what you get.

ASME welder
Call an ASME certified welder/boiler repair outfit (ASME R stamp?) and have'm weld it up, also have them review the rest of boiler at same time, assess whether it's time to replace it or if repairs will do for time being.0
