air in water heater

I have a customer with a 6 gal electric water heater that is above a drop ceiling that serves 1 sink. The sink is not used very much, maybe once a week. The problem is when used, he gets air out of the faucet for a few seconds then works fine until the next time he uses it.

Where is the air comming from? The only things i can think of is the air is comming out of solution when heated? Or maybe through vacuum breaker?

Any thoughts or solutions are appreciated.

    siphon??

I had a simmalar situation once where a high flow fixture was drawing water back from the heater as many faucets will only stop flow one way . A check valve on the inlet to the heather solved the problem.

If it is a glass-lined tank...

... there is an anode and it slowly produces gas as it protects the tank. Yours is a common problem with tanks that aren't used often. Options are to use it more, find a non-ferrous tank or go tankless. I did once put a float vent above a heater and it worked, but hard water killed the vent pretty fast.
