What size steam boiler?

I thought that was what I had done. The two examples of EDR require some size burner to support them. That is my real question. What size burner is required? Sorry if I was not clear. The boiler will be gas fired. I expect to use a Lennox boiler.

What size steam boiler?
I have a two pipe steam vapor system with two mains and one dry return line. The radiators have a EDR of 924 square feet. (924 X 1.33 X 240 = 294,941) I do NOT use the basement radiators and have no plans to do so in the future. This leaves me a of EDR 781 Square feet. (781 X 1.33 X 240 = 249,295)
What would be the most efficient replacement boiler size assuming a 82% efficency rating? 400,000/328,000, 350,000/287,000 or 300,000/246,000 ??????orD0 -
you size the boiler....
of a steam system by EDR not btu's..... look at that. You also should not have to add a Pick up factor unlessthere is a lot of excess piping. Most all mfg. figure this in to the calclations. Oil or gas? Gas - a Weil-Mclain EGH-85 would work. Oil- a SGO-8 section just suggestions...Smith and Burnham also make good choices. kpc0 -
Don't need a pick up factor?
I'm lost now! Everything I've read explains what the pick up factor is and how to calculate it. Now I'm told I don't need it unless I have excess piping. Help please.0 -
My personanl experience with the boiler sizing equaions
Last summer our one pipe steam boiler was replaced. I specified a 'right-sized' boiler while the plumber would have put in the next larger size. He told me "I was responsible . . . .".
The boiler was just below 1.5 times my best estimate for the radiators' EDR ( 400 sq ft). The former oil boiler was rated at 640 sq ft! We here in NYC have probably seen the coldest weather for this year and we have found that the boiler heats up faster and seems to have reserve, even at 10 degrees, above.'0 -
Look at a Boiler ....
ratings chart. Unless I am reading it wrong... most all have notes that build in the pick up factor into the net ratings.... But read this he explains it w/ more authority than I can... http://www.heatinghelp.com/newsletter.cfm?Id=540 -
The boiler's Net rating in BTU and EDR
already includes the pickup factor. As long as everything is properly insulated and vented, you should be fine.
