The ridgid freeze machine works great
I dont know how long it will take to freeze a line that size. I have never used it for bigger than 11/2". Its nice knowing you cant run out of carbon dioxide or have to change tanks. Pricy though.0 -
city water not sure material if it copper or gavl.0 -
Freezing
Be very careful with this large a pipe. Is there any service in your town that can do this as a service with their own equipment? I assume the City cannot shut the water down at their meter? Can your reps for some advice on how long it takes to freeze this line safely.

Jeff
Jeff I have also used the Rigid unit...but it was on 2 inch K copper. The biggest thing is that you will need to dent or out of round the pipe down stream from where you are freezing to keep the plug of ice from coming out if the pipe is not frozen completely or would thaw out. Plus there will cannot be any water movement will you are freezing this.....I'm not sure the Rigid unit would be the unit of choice because it tool over an hour for me to freeze this 2 inch line even with the help of dry ice....Just my 2 cents...0 -
there always people in the building along with all the equiment0 -

This is what we use and much anything over 2" makes our guys real nervous...we just don't do enough of these to gain experience and confidence. A 4" isn't bad if you have the right equipment and allow the correct amount of time. Read the download and you will get an idea.
Keep a bucket or two and a good wet vac handy!!

a i know were thinking of framing it out early in the thinking stage0 -
There must be a company that does this more than infrequently. This just sounds like a disaster waiting to happen. Even with the right equipment, if a person has never done this a on 4-inch pipe, how much experience can you have?

Quick search...
Jeff,
Since you mention Chicago...I did a quick search and found a company that specializes in freezing in Antioch IL:

Don't know a thing about them...but 25 years in the business according to their site. I imagine they have significant insurance.0
