Not familiar with the pipe thawing machine, but we tried a portable welder once and the copper disipated the heat faster than we could put it in worked good on iron pipe though but hard on welder.

THAWING FROZEN HEAT PIPES
Will the electric pipe thawing machine work on frozen heat lines that are mostly copper however there is a buried length of HePex in several locations that were hard to get to that are probably where the ice dam is.

If it is frozen in the pex or if the electricity needs to go through the pex to thaw it then it won't work. Everything between the cables needs to be able to conduct electricity.

Bring on the Heat..
Buried in the building? Or outside?
If it is inside you must bring the Core temp of the building up, way up!Say to the 80thies so that the heat can unthaw the frozen lines. It will take Days.. or depending on the diameter of the tubing you may use Hot pressurized water (Kinda like drain cleaning) to melt the ice, but this is kind of hard when you are dealing with the Smaller diameter tubing's used in residential houses0
