Maximum pipe wrench length

What are considered the maximum pipe wrench length to use when working with black pipe? 1", 2", 2-1/2", 3"?
For instance, if a fitting on a 1-1/2" pipe is stuck, might I rip apart the pipe if I use a big wrench or "helper"?

for 1-1/2 pipe i would use 2 2ft pipe wrenchs with a bar on each max. --1 to hold back and 1 to turn --if it was installed with EXpando you Will rip the pipe unless you heat up the female fitting --if the pipe is leaking near the fitting its got rotted threads --its usually easier to cut and chop ----//if its cast fittings crack the fitting --though the other side is probably rotted as well --then you have to find some decent pipe --cut and thread -----you might want to call a pro ----before you make a real mess0
