Main vent ?????

I have a 1 pipe steam system with a Gorton "D" as the main
vent. After reading much of what you guys advise, I believe
that a Gorton "#2" would be preferable. My question,
can I use the existing 1/8" hole and piping/fittings or re-drill,
re-tap and pipe for the 1/2" #2 ??
Thanks to all for all the help...................

That 1/8\" tapping
is your limiting factor.
If no vent existed and it was just an open hole, the venting capacity would be about the same as a Gorton #2, but you cannot fit one in, obviously. That alone would settle it for me; I would want to re-tap or create the appropriate orifice.
Also, if the vent is just screwed in to the tapping like that, there is no protection for the vent itself, unless you extend it with 1/8" piping. You might as well do it correctly and hope you have room to do so.
I would install at least a 1/2" if not a 3/4" tapping to allow flexibility in what vents you finally use and in what arrangement.0 -
increase from 1/8\"...
Or put a short (1.5" or 2") 1/8 nipple in and put a 1/8" to large (3/8", 1/2" or 3/4") reducing coupling on the nipple and pipe to one or more Gorton #1's or a #2 w/ 3/8", 1/2" or 3/4" pipe & fittings as appropriate.
