Heat reclamation by central chimney?
Options
After feeling how warm the walls get around a masonry chimney which runs centrally three stories through a home, I wonder how much waste heat is actually reclaimed? In this instance the boiler is an 80% gas atmospheric, so some percentage of the 20% going out the boiler flue is heating the chimney mass and actually being retained in the building envelope. Kind of like "radiant chimney heating"?
Has anyone ever tried to calculate how much waste heat is recovered by a chimney passing through the heated building space? I guess you could measure the surface area and temperature to get an idea of the heat emitted. Any thoughts?
