Drop Header Riser /Lateral Lengths

On most drop headers, I see risers of equal length coming out of the boiler and laterals of equal length crossing to the drop header. (This is not considering any differential to pitch the header towards the equalizer or necessary heights above the boiler waterline)

My question is: Is keeping the laterals close to equal length a necessity? If one of the laterals were made longer (4-8 inches)than the other how might this affect the system? I can see some theoretical problems but was wondering whether this actually causes any problems in the "real world".
