Boiler Pressure at 10 psi

have a question. My 2 year old boiler seems to running at what believe to be a high pressure (10 psi). Once reaching this pressure it opens up and let the steam out. Shortly there after the system closes and heats up to 10 psi, where this cycle continues. I have a Honeywell PA404A pressuretrol which is set for .5 psi cut in and 1 psi additive differential. Is this normal or is the pressuretrol broken or something else?

Suspect
a clogged pigtail (siphon tube). The controls so isolated cannot see what his happening inside the boiler.
Take them out and brush them totally clean. If you can, replace them with red brass pipe if they are now iron.
Your settings sound about as good as you can maintain with a pressuretrol- if the actual operation is that far off, suspect the piping to the controls.
The gauge may too be damaged, off or isolated, but the control actually does something. The gauge in this case may well be telling the truth.
If both the gauge and the pressuretrol share the same pig-tail, I would suspect the inlet to the pressuretrol itself then. One way to find out....
Get a professional in there if you have any doubts about your abilities. This is safety here.0 -
Mike- This is VERY UN "NORMAL" !!!
You need to have a pro that knows steam look at it right away. The way it sounds is the steam controls are not working and the "opens up and let the pressure out" is your safety relief valve opening and doing its job. The pressuretrol maybe broken or it maybe something simple like a plugged pig tail. Either way High Pressure is NOT a good thing. Your system should be normally operating at less than 2 PSI.
You might want post where you live on here as one of the steam pros on this board maybe near you and can get you fixed up. You need to get your steam system looked at right away.
You also might want to get Dan's book "We Got Steam Heat" (See "A Steamy Deal " at the bottom of this page) It's a book written for homeowners and explains the proper operation and maintenance of steam heating systems.0 -
