What cast iron boiler is built to military specifications? Where did you find any military specifications for a cast iron boiler? Do you think it was possible that any of those System 2000 boilers were not receiving an annual service or receiving a service by unqualified people? There are many cast iron boilers that have not lasted for 10 years. It depends on the make, the install, the service; too many variables to state that a cast iron boiler will last three times longer than a steel boiler. There are 50 year old steel boilers still running without leaks.

    Maker of System 2000

Top quality company located in New Jersey. Manufacturer of the System 2000. In my humble opinion the best boiler made in the U.S.A. A brilliant design without any of the drawbacks of condensing boilers. You almost cannot hear it run. It extracts heat out of the boiler so that it is not going up the chimney. When you look at the products from this company you can see that they take pride in what they sell.
  • I agree

totally with Erich . And they are a nice boiler for a tight spot . We installed this EK yesterday.

    clearances

Ron, from the photos its hard to tell but it would appear you do not have proper clearances off that venting. Normally, oil fired appliances require 18" off single walled chimney connector--what does EK call for?. Also, is that a homemade wall penetration? What kind of chimney?

Rest of installation looks like a work of art--nice job!

  • I know

the boiler itself and the edge of the flue were over a foot away from the back wall . This was a 7 inch galvanized prefab . We do the best with what's handed to us . We ain't gonna knock down walls to get another 4 inches tops to make it to the 18 inch minimum ( and I wonder why 18 inches is the magic number ? ) :)

Actually the customer is very interested in getting rid of the prefab and installing a direct vent kit . Thanks alot Bob .
  • I think

it'll save a sh**load of fuel :) I have some people working on data from the first few EKs we installed last year . Fuel use savings adjusted for degree days should be coming in soon . I believe we're going to see a few , like some oversized 60 year old cast iron beasties , go above a 40 % cut . Thanks Ron .

    Junk to Me

We've had nothing but nightmares with the System 2000. We've found them to be just a steel boiler with some bells and whistles and controls. We've scrapped several that were 16 years old, and Energy Kinetics is an IMPOSSIBLE company to deal with.

We've found them to lie outright and fail over and over to keep their word.

Compared with a CAST IRON three pass boiler with Tekmar controls that are built in North America to military specifications?

It's like comparing a Yugo to a Ford Truck. The iron boiler will outlive it three times over, and the service will be five times better.

Just our humble opinions, and our experience.

System 2000 Snake Oil is just that. Lies.

    Clearances

The magic number for flue pipe clearance to combustibles for EK is 9" with standard flue pipe, 3" with L-vent.

    Sorry to dis-agree

And wholeheartedly disagree at that. While some here dont agree with the concept of EK, we all have our own preferences. EK is one of the most stand up companies I've ever had the pleasure of dealing with. Their tech support has always been top notch in my experience and have NEVER known them to lie to me about anything. To say they do is a bold statement (and slanderous) without any supporting evidence or documentation. Depending on the circumstances, I've seen 40% savings in the first year of operation. And when properly serviced and maintained, I have units in the field that are easily 16 years old that have required little or no extra service besides an annual inspection. I'm not sure why its just your area that seems to be eating EK's. I doubt its the boiler and would have to take a serious look at service procedure, if in fact there has been any. Its no wonder why those guys(and others) have dis appeared from theses boards. Having to endure the negativity of unsubstantiated claims makes it impossible for them or anyone to try to create an atmoshere conducive to learning. Its a real shame because they are a good friend to this industry and dont deserve the bulls**t your shoveling. JMO.

    EK has worked for us

and there isn't any part of it that isn't firmly based on common sense. After 20 years of using them, I haven't seen any of the 'snake oil'. I do see a fair number of poor installs and lack of maintenance on systems before we get involved. My guess is that anyone who attends the EK training, owns a combustion analyzer and knows how to use it, and can read directions, will have the same results I have. I know one local contractor who tells his customers they shouldn't own one because there's no place to see the fire. That is the mentality of contractors who are headed for extinction.

The only problems I've seen, is lack of maintenance, incompetent technicials, and poor installation practices.

I believe in them and the company and just installed an EK1 Frontier in my own home.

It does just what it says it does.
