No heat steam boiler

Today my old steam Ng kiwanee for 12 unit bldg would not fire until we hit the reset button on what I believe is the boilers saftey control panel. What would cause this to short and lock out, its an old control the one that sells for 1000$ now. I know nothing about controls and my tech is 3 days behind. Its running now but I need to fix or find the cause of the failure. Thanks
