Intelegent Advertising... A Difference between US & Europe

I actually had this idea for a thread several weeks ago - but had promised to do a writeup on failure mechanism of mod/con HXs.

Warning: this post will likely take you a while to get through as the linked videos take time to watch - so please come back later if you have only a few minutes now.

I'm not sure how much all of you pay attention to the advertising that is done for the same products and companies overseas vs the U.S.

I'd like to present a comparison: I will use Honda as an example as they have some adds that are easy to find as they were made for Europe.

First thing to note: They do 2 minute TV commercials - so these can be a lot more involved than what you are used to seeing here in the U.S.

First up is one from a few years ago that some of you have probably seen (or at least I hope you have); to introduce the Honda Accord to Europe. May I present: Cog

    http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-6006084025483872237

Note that this was made with virtually no computer graphics (they removed the reflection from a window) and no trick photography. It was shot in two pieces - and the film spliced (and I'll let you try to figure out where). All pieces are from a Honda Accord - and it took lots of takes.

If you want to know more fascinating history - do an internet search on Honda cog.

It also went viral and won lots of awards...

Next: Something different - no a lot different.

Standard diesel engines are noisy and often belch smoke... Honda decided to engineer a Diesel engine that did neither - but, how did you promote that it was really different - especially when its initial sales were rather dismal... Grrr:

Catchy.... huh! It has been reported that as a comparison of the same time period before the ad and after the ad sales went from less than 1000 to over 20,000, and have never slowed down.

Here is another example of something I doubt you will never see in the U.S. Honda purchased air time for a live commercial - imagine how difficult it is to pull off a live ad. Difficult is worth doing:

Finally, for anyone who knows the life story of Mr. Honda... Here is a tribute to it. Please pay attention to the series of Honda vehicles. The Impossible Dream:

Now you can do internet research on all of those (and I left a few trails for the curious to follow); but my key point is why the heck don't we have adds here in the U.S. that engage us like that? Once in a while perhaps. But - nothing like this.

I do note that I do not own a Honda and am not planning to buy one either. I just think that they make such a great example of the difference in advertising between the U.S. and Europe.

    Honda and HVAC

Thanks Perry. Cog is a favorite of mine and like great art, can be watched over and over.

The following may be a little self serving but it does feature Honda after all.

Keep in mind that Micro-CHP is on the wish list of most developed nations.

    Perry you need a date

Judging by the tomes you scribe, I am guessing you either live alone, with your parents or have a bad marriage. No offense but man you light up the keyboard. You are the new voice of the Wall!

    Honda

Interesting to look toward a Japanese manufacturer for an example of European advertising?

I know the Freewatt is on my wish list. I have been having a difficult time getting in touch with anyone at ECR to get more information. I understand it, as I assume they have been having a lot of interest in the Freewatt.

    Of course there is...

The tires are weighted inside - and old trick, and they only have to roll far enough to bump the next one.

Cog is a masterpiece of very precise applied physics.

    Perhaps Honda felt that

Perhaps Honda felt that they had nothing to loose in Europe - and thus allowed more creativity.

However, the fact that up to 2 minute adds are somewhat common along with the different focus of the average European customer just makes for a different kind of Ad.

    JohnNY ya Think?

Most, maybe even all was computer generated or assisted !

To an untrained eye or someone that is not in touch with physics it looks good and is a petty cool advert.

Not Intelligent from the Physics standpoint but for the Marketing :-)
