steam radiator lead pipe hot, radioator not

This is occuring in only one room. All other rooms functioning well. Vents all set at fast. The pipe coming out of the floor is hot but the steam isn't getting into rest of the radiator. It had functioned recently. What do you suggest?

  • I'm assuming this is a one pipe steam system. You say it was functioning?...Has any type of work been done to the radiator or in the immediate vicinity recently?

Valve Closed - Check your supply valve someone may have closed it. This valve operates either fully open or fully closed.

Vent Plugged Up - With the heating system TURNED OFF, remove the vent and see if you can blow through it. If you have another vent, try that to see if it makes a difference. Swap it out with a vent which you know is working from another room, if you don't have a spare vent.

Check the slope of the radiator with a bubble level. It should be sloped so it will drain towards the valve /steam pipe. This allows the condensate (water) to drain out.

There are other possibilities. Try these first and let us know what happens.

If you don't have them yet I'd highly recommend you get Dan's books (See "A Steamy Deal" at the bottom of this page)
They're easy reading, full of diagrams and information on steam heating systems. They're written for the homeowner and in an evening or two, you'll understand all about your steam system.
