you can get a lot more thickness but at slightly less R-value per inch.

But it will look like crap. No matter how good you are.

    Is it safe to use regular fiberglass batts or roll (wrap it around the pipe, then tape) to insulate steam pipes instead of the "pre-formed pipe" fiberglass. I know it would be more work.
