    Skimming

    hi all.
quick question on skimming. I had this done by contractor. He added some saleen solution into the boiler and asked me to drain it after a week. I am seeing some oil in my sight glass sitting on top of water.

How do i completely drain this oil out? Is it from the drain valve on the bottom of boiler?
Please help as my contractor in on extended vacay and im guessing this oil is not good for my system.

    Thanks.

take a little off the top

You're not likely to get the oil out by draining the boiler. Find the installation manual for your boiler. There should be skimming instructions in there.

The oil will stick to the walls of the boiler and not come out with the water. If it's not a lot of oil there are surfactants you can add to the water that will chemically bond to the oil molecules and make them precipitate so they can be drained. But you would still need to open some tapping to pour the stuff in. And many of these cleaners are not as effective as one would hope.

So perhaps you could use this as an opportunity to "get handy," or you could call the guy back. It's normal to need to skim multiple times.
