What is short cycling?

on a non condensing boiler, for example, the boiler needs to fire for a long enough period to warm and dry the heat exchanger and flue piping. If not those "vapors" aka condensation will start to corrode or eat away at the components.

Hard to pin down an exact time as it depends on a few factors related to the installation, load on the boiler flue location length, etc.

I like to see at least a 10 minute on cycle to get temperatures up and minimize component cycling, even on a boiler that can handle flue gas condensation, like a mod con appliance.

Modulating burners, buffer tanks, exact sizing of load and output are a few things to consider to deal with short cycling equipment. Same applies to heat pumps, solar, and other heat exchange concepts.

    Fellas,
What exactly happens when a boiler short cycles?
