Eric Burdon and The Animals

That's quite a feat, though sometimes it's sad when former major acts end up playing somewhat lesser gigs--I remember seeing the Rascals at the after-Grammy party in NYC some years ago--it was more like a wedding band gig. But it's really an amazing feat to be still in demand over 40 years after they broke in to the business.
Burdon sang full throttle and directly from his soul, not many British invasion bands could claim that. Dave Clarke Five's singer did that too on a few songs, but no real comparison to Burdon. Procol Harum's Gary Brooker, Stevie Winwood. My favorite at the time was the Stones, but Jagger is more of an actor than a vocalist, though a damn good one. See their live Scorcese movie--the music blisters. Buddy Guy's blues jam with them is as intense a performance as I've ever seen on film.
So Paul, what's the name of your band?

Animals and...
Chax Chandler discovered Jimi Hendrix and brought him to the UK where he started his rise to fame. Eric Burdon had his stint with War..."Spill the Wine". How about "Sky Pilots"? I think that was in '69.
"San Francisco Nights", "When I was Young". I saw them once as a reunion show of sorts about ten years ago on a bill with BTO. Brought me back then, brings me back further now...geez, I'm getting old.

Sky Pilot
I was a very impressionable 10yr old when that song was on AM radio. Probably shaped my thoughts about military action as much as all the anti-war stuff going on around me at that time as I was just becoming aware of the world around me.
That being said I have and still do support our brethren in the middle east0 -

Our band had the good luck to open for Eric last May. We had a lot of fun, but Eric is definitely past his prime. He has health issues, I believe asthma, and his voice is not what it used to be. Still, it was a good show. I think the best song of the night was It's My Life.
If you go to see his show, don't expect what you see in the 60's and 70's videos. But he's still a large piece of musical history.0 -
Yepppp went thru a box of cleanex last night
Markie...you didn't know Mad Dog had a sensitive side???? Mad Dog

I see it as a well-intentioned anti-war song
I don't think Eric and the animals meant to diss soldiers at all from the lyrics. With you..I am Always IN SUPPORT OF ALL AMERICAN MILITARY PERSONELL. Mad Dog

Springsteen used to play that song a lot live
in the '70s and '80s, weaving stories about his adolescence into it. It was pretty intense when he did it that way. We could all relate to it.
A great song is a great song, no matter who's playing it.

Eric
I was lucky enough to open for him a good 15 yrs ago, and he was starting to show his age back then. I really had to stand back and just enjoy the musical history that poured out of that guy though..... one of the legends.0 -

Heck I don't move around or yell and scream like I did in the 60's and 70's.

I hear ya...BUT
Sometimes one is better off listening at home. I saw Ian Gillan from Deep Purple (a singer I love/ LOVED)...his voice is shot...he's done - Robert Plant too!!! If ya wanna go , get whacked, watch him in person, and reminsce...that is fine...but don't have very high expectations....only for your imagination. Mad Dog

But some of the old guys can still do it. We opened for Felix Cavaliere last March and, while obviously aged, put on a great show. And if you get the chance to see Peter Noone and Herman's Hermits, GO. He's a great showman, funny, still sounds like he did 40 years ago, and has a bunch of fan club members that follow him around. Well worth it.0 -
"We Gotta Get Out Of This Place" was my army platoon's theme song in 19650 -
Oh Lord
Please don't let me be misunderstood
One of the great unique voices. Good call Mad Dog...0 -
Newer music...
Eric also did alot of blues music over the years and most recently (2006) released a CD with a song somewhat about himself and the troubles he has been through....The title tract of the CD is "Soul of a man" and is played often on the blues channels on satilite radio. Really do enjoy his music, thanks for the walk down memory lane Mad Dog!0 -
Eric Burdon
I wish I was in a field of tall grass right about now.0 -
early hippie
Peter Noone once remarked that during the British Invasion, Burdon was always wearing a leather pouch, which resembled Daniel Boone's hunting pouch. Noone said Burdon was known for his 'pharmacy' contained in that pouch. He would pass stuff out to anybody and everybody and you never knew what you were getting because it was all mixed together like jellybeans. Mama Cass Elliot used to pass out LSD like that.
I enjoyed seeing Eric perform for the Ed. TV fundraiser drive but I would have much prefered it if he had not been wearing a T-shirt with Che Guevarra's face on it. His music was pretty good so I'll look past his politics.
Yes, he is an asthmatic and has been carried off stage more than once due to an attack.
Very recognizable voice and good singing technique.0 -
Don't let me be misunderstood
Caught Eric in Dayton last summer--wow. He capped off the evening that included Bad Finger, Melanie, others. Did all his hits. He's not quite the same, but still a damn fine act. How about his female bass player--more energy than I've ever seen on stage. She was bopping on the sidelines to the other acts all evening. Very talented and fun to watch. Eric brought the house down.0 -
Yeah, I met her at our gig. Very nice. Big heels too. Don't know how she walks around in those things.0 -
