Changing/Flushing System

With a hot water heating system, how often shoould you flush or change the water in the boiler/system? We just changed the circulator pump on a 30-year old WM boiler and the water was black and silty. It actually felt gritty. It clogged the impeller and killed the pump. I kknow that introducing new water into the system is no good for the booiler, but how often should it be flushed? Or is there some other means of avoiding this problem?

Black Iron?
Same EJ as the Mixing valve? HO or Tech ?
30 years is gut for a boiler if it was take care of!
Black, how black? try sticking a Magnet into a jar of this fluid if you get debris (Iron) onto the magnet let me know!
Also: what is your PH at??
As for the flushing on all of my installs i start with a clean system. i use "Rhomar" system cleaner to get rid of any Manufactures oils or left over flux.
As to the how often should it be flushed: it depends!
Hopefully you pull no or not much iron on the Magnet!0
