I love being right...

Got a call about a dead snow-melt system, put in new last summer. Would not come on, installer moved. Very top-notch install, but 2 have looked at it with no luck. First thing I see is the WWSD indicated on the Tekmar 665. It is a bright sunny day, and the WWSD was set for 40*. Driveway has tons of ice in all the shady areas. Next the Knight will not fire. No gas pressure, regulator in boiler room. Turn up regulator until knight is not seeing more than 2" loss in pressure, fires right up. Now boiler loop heat, nothing else. Then re-wire tek to send power to relay and it fires up all the ZVs and pumps. Then heat call ends. Slab sensor is in very bright sunny area, so I put snow on it. Fires right back up. Still no flow. Pressure is 0. Fill and wham, circulatiuon. It pays to be a good tech, and have sharp troubleshooting skills. Cust was amazed! What is used to test glycol to water mixture? I have never installed a snowmelt system before. Glycol & pump are there.

    Refractometer

You need a refractometer to measure glycol concentration.

  • I don't mind being right,,,

except sometimes people get mad about it. There's a guy that STILL owes me the $500 he bet me one time. Tried to tell everybody the two stage condensate pump switched the pumps back and forth to even out run time and argued when I tried to explain the concept of two stages. Then he bet me $500 that he was right. Did I mention he still owes me the $500? LOL... ;)

Yea, I have a Misco, just the analog though. Nice meter, good company.

    If

the condensate controls had lead-lag, you would alternate the pumps based on how the cycle switch was set. It would also work as two-stage, when one cannot keep up or fails, the second pump would take over.

    You were both right :)

I am not asking for the $500 though.

it depends on the type of alternator control --there are different types he doesn't owe you a thing
  • Nope,

simple two stage float switch on the specific pump we had in the building and that's all we were talking about. He does too owe me! It's been about 20 years now but I haven't given up. I can still hear him, "I'll bet you FIVE HUNDRED DOLLARS..." LOL...

Problem was he was the lead "A" mechanic and I was just a lowly "B" so how could I possibly be right and he possibly be wrong? ;)
