Hi-
Resumes- These actually are fairly easy to do. Dont let it freak you out.
A resume should be:
1. Just one page
2. Be customized so that it contains the basic information that the person your submitting it to wants. What you then have to do is figure out what the person actually wants. In your case I would think that the guy youre submitting it to needs your resume to cover his **** when asked Are these guys competent and have enough experience and have you checked them out?. Therefore your resume needs to address these issues.
This would differ from the resume you'd use when applying for a job. There you put in all your skills. You never know exactly what your new prospective boss wants. He maybe looking for a plumbing /heating guy but if you have computer skills to that maybe just the difference which gets you the job over the other guy. With the resume you need now I doubt if they are interested in your computer` skills or what you did in school. They just want to be convinced that you have the experience to do the job competently.
Use Google and type in Resume and select images at the top. Pick out the layout youd like to use and put in the following information. Be prepared to redo it several times. Allow others to read it over`and submit changes and ideas.
Double check Spelling!!
What I would do is put your :
Name: First Last
Company Name: (Your Company name) (you might want to put the company name first with your name underneath it.
Address:
City:
State :
Zip
Phones: (Business and Cell )
Email address.
Website: (You have a great website so Id definitely include this)
Summary:: (one or two sentences of who you are and what you do). Like "Im a master` plumber and have extensive experience doing (types of systems)" "Ive ( worked in the industry for so many years if youve only been in a short time you can leave this out.) Mention your position in the company and how long youve been in business. You might also mention your partners/ employees experience with something like "Between all of us we have over 120 years in (steam heating)etc."
Qualifications: This is where to list your licenses, with numbers etc. and professional schools you have attended, seminars etc. (they arent interested in where you attended school etc. unless you have a Doctorate in plumbing from Harvard or Princeton! :) )
Experience: List what areas of plumbing/ heating you have done. (List the ones that apply in the area of the type of job your applying for first) You might include you website address here. For examples of work we have done please see our website: www.your website.com
References: Supplied upon request.
Your better off putting "Supplied upon request" and then having applicable list ready to go.
On references - Have different lists of references for different type jobs. A person who wants you to do his steam system isn't interested in the hearing from a reference about the hotwater job you did.
Your probably want to have a :
Big Job List (work youve done for companies, cities etc.)
Steam heat list
Hotwater Heating list
Repipe/general plumbing list
bathroom list
etc. etc.
On each reference list put your name, company and phone number at the top of the page and then the name, address, phone number, and contact name if a company. Id have a minimum of three and probably no more than five. ("Quality is better than quantity")
Make sure you contact each of your references first and ask them if they would mind you using them as a reference !!!! It also isnt a bad idea to call them when you're referencing them for a big job and let them know someone might be calling them.
Hope this is of help to you.

John, I would say start with your plumbing supply job
then just outline historically what type of work you have done at your company on a timeline along with old references and current references along with any schooling along the way. Maybe you can do what a prospective employee did for us, I asked him what he currently was doing and he had been maintaining and installing equipment in the state pen. I asked him when he could come in for interview, he said in appx 60 days., I had to ask him if he lived on site, well uh, er, hm, yes!!! He was waiting on parole. Tim0 -
ahhh, but a paper route show initiative! LOL
Johnny nothing stands out more than a guy who has been dedicated to his trade all his life.0 -
Resume
As a civil engineer, we submit our professional resumes with every proposal. I can send an example with names changed to protect the innocent. It's an entirely different thing than your personal resume. Something tells me yours will be very strong.0 -
That's interesting, Andrew. I wouldn't mind taking a look.
I'm trying to compare mine with some of the better ones I've received from others looking for work but they just don't translate or convey the same idea.
I'm no superstar, mind you. I just don't want to short change myself.
Why should I?

Example
Nearly all of our work is public, and they require professional resumes. It's mostly a list of relevant past projects that demonstrate your varied skills and accomplishments, printed on company letterhead. It also includes your education, certifications, continuing education, and trade organization memberships. Typically they are one page, but key members of the team may have two pages.
I emailed you an example in Word format. Did you receive it? Any memberships or certifications like those from the RPA or other organizations would go on the left.0 -
John consider
contacting Pam at PK Services. She is listed in the FAP section.
Pam is an expert at resumes, and loves doing them. She spends the time needed speaking to her client and finds out things about them and their career they didn't know.
I have reccomanded her to several people who needed resumes and they were all happy with the end result and even happier when they landed a new job.
Thanks
Tom

It is difficult
I find it difficult as an employee to do a resume. You need to get your good points across but it can be difficult looking like you are bragging. John from your posts once you get your arms around it you should do fine.

I was thinking that too, Tom
I met Pam at Wetstock and she shines. Not to mention "local", not that it matters in the e-age. I think she could sort it out and make an excellent product for you, John.
