Adding HX to drainback tank

how much energy do you ant to move out of thh HX? Check out the SSTS website, they have some sizing info for those copper coils in a still tank mlike that. Sometimes headering multiple 1/2" Coils is a better way to build a coil HX. Keep the coils up near the top of the tank for heat removal, at the very bottom for solar input.
Also price a flat plate hx, you get a lot of HX bang for your bucks with plate style hx. But it would require an extra circ.

A customer of mine
has an old drainback system. 25 years old. It has 26 4 x 8 flat plates, and an 800 gallon storage tank. Round tank 6 ft in diameter and 4 ft high. It heats domestic water and heating for the house. The storage tank has always been problematic because it has no Heat exchangers. It just has dip tubes that draw the water out of the top of the tank. Occasionaly the water level drops and they ace their circulators by sucking air. Bad design. The insulated top has to be replaced and I am pushing them to take this opportunity to drain the tank and add some kind of HX isolation for the 2 loops. (domestic water and heating loops) I want to keep it simple and hopefully inexpensive. They are retired and don't have a lot of expendable income. They are also very nice folks that I really like. I was thinking of installing a couple of loops of 3/4 copper, horizontally, just below the water line. To hold it up to that level in the tank I was thinking of putting plastic lawn furniture tables under the loops since the plastic wouldnt rust in the water. Does anyone see any problems with this? Do you have better ideas? Please comment or opine. I am open to suggestions. WW
