  • Is anyone here familiar with Labor

in Germany? Are the plumbers and hvac contractors completely different or do they cross over like here? Are they union or non union. How well are journeymen paid? Just wondering.

There is both. Its much like it is in the US. Some are organized while many are not. You dont have to be union to work.

The difference between US and Germany is that in order to own a 'trade' company the owner must be master certified. This is mandated by federal law. It is overseen by boards in each town/city. Its a lot like licensing in a US state but it is more stringent. Written and practical exams, so many years of experience, etc.

Cost is what you spend , value is what you get.

    German techs

All German plumbing/hydronic technicians (and almost all European techs) must belong to the Guild, or union. No exceptions. There are 2 licenses, master and residential, with different lengths of apprenticeship. I believe the master lic. is 6 years. I don't know the pay rates, but Heatmeister (Richard Graves)was lic in Germany and visits this site regularly. I'm sure he'll share. The HVAC (ducted) trades have different licenses and apprenticeships.

    Yes Unions

In bigger company's they have Unions,i do not think they needed them because the "Workers" have lot's of rights anyway.

Pay rates,Vacations,Health Insurance/benefits/Training/ Schooling were petty good 25 years ago not sure now ? As i have been in the states since 1984.

I was a Heizungs und LüftungsBauer in a company (Helmut Haushalter near Frankfurt) with 80 plus employees which is Heating/Air/Hvac tech.
and has nothing to do with plumbing(Klempner) so yes they keep that separated even if the company did both.

The "Industrie und Handelskammer"may be the best way to find out more about the current pay rates/benefits and they may have Trade(Lehre)exchange Programs too?.

Maybe i will "Sprechen sie Deutsch" with some German heating dudes on the next heating show in Germany.

    Richard :)

How do you say "I would like another Budwieser please" in Germaneeze?

In Germany don't you have to have a family member in that particular trade b4 you can join or go into plumbing, heating, etc...? That's what I heard from some traveling BMW heads from the motherland.

Jaa Met Roman it helps to have some "family" but ain't that so over here too .I started my trade with a dead beat "Plumber" and switched very soon to a Larger Company in Bad Homburg at which my "Onkel" was working in the Design/Planning department

So yes i had some "Connections" But also upon a Interview i gave the right answers when it came to the question of what my favorite Beer is : LICHER Bier not Budweiser!

    Beer Family

You know in this country it's sacrilege to diss the BEER OF KINGS! We are going to have to get those taste Buds Wiser.

Guinness and Bud lite.... the new black and tan. Think we are due for some blind taste testing on the E-man's tab.

    Ho Ho Ho.

re: Tab for Guiness and Bud?

Sorry Met Roman, but the card does not come out for
Budweiser. Solar thermal coup discussion Monday evening?

I personally would like to see some federal law and state or county administered regulation/requirements for the mechanical/solar trade.
Of course grandfather in existing old solar dudes like yourself. Incentives should be tied to maintenance or service contract of some length.

    Discrimination

Don't think the card should discriminate but guess I could force down a couple of IPA's.

I would like to see the government get out of the contractor's bus. with incentives, rebates, and etc.... and subsidise at the manufacture's level. Keeping a watchful eye so costs do not roll out of control which tends to happen when so much is given. Should be easier to watch 20 companies than 2,000.

It starts with a question about labor in Germany

so of course the topic swerves to beer... A natural progression! I love The Wall.
