Dripping steam valve

I have a dripping steam valve on a 6" main pipe. It looks like it needs repacking.

The valve is 80 years old. Is it reasonable to assume that there is no way this valve can be repaired and should I plan on just removing it?

Why did the "dead men" put these giant valves on the steam mains? I can't imagine that there are ever a time that any of them were ever closed.

    graphite or teflon packing

repacking valve glands is routine maintenence. to replace a valve for that reason is not necessary. unless you want to generate ADDITIONAL revenue , then it is a great idea.

i have a few of those also, and i too wonder what they were for.
maybe used for throttling rather than cutting off the flow of steam?
on one, the studs holding top to bottom broke while tightening; and i put C- clamps in their place one winter. they have held for 15 yrs!

i repacked one also about the same time, and used teflon string-seems to have held well, but of course i am not turning them on and off.--nbc
