ford transit

The only reason a Sprinter has good fuel economy is because it is really a Mercedes truck that has been rebadged. In Europe there are many different models, over 200 different combinations, including many smaller ones. In Europe it is also available with a 4 cylinder diesel engine which gives it even better mileage. In Germany it is the ambulance of choice. It is assembled from kits in South Carolina that are imported from Europe..

    Americas outlook on deisel

engines is hard to understand. I went to Europe when I was young and most cars were diesel. I look at my ford diesel truck and although it has impressive power it is not built to be efficient at all. It would seem that if our fuel prices went up and stayed up we would probably have some leaps in the efficiency of the vehicles available. The Sprinter is the only thing that comes close and although a good start it is huge.

    The Europeans...

... calculate diesel emissions differently than North America. They have a factor for improved fuel economy. Therefore, there are lots of diesel options available in the rest of the world, that you can't get on this continent. Apparently, Ford makes a diesel crew-cab Ranger that just kicks a##, but you can't get it here.

#2 son is an auto mechanic working on his heavy duty licence. He - and every mechanic he works with - absolutely LOATHE all the new diesel engines here. The emission equipment is a nightmare. I have strict instruction NOT to sell or trade my '03 Cummins diesel Ram.
