DanH - let me know if you want help installing new forum system

    Dan H (and everyone else),

As a huge fan of Dan's books, and as a real beneficiary of this forum, i just want to offer up my help if you decide at some point that you want to move to a better forum system.

This old invision system is clearly a few generations behind the times and has some really painful deficiencies when it comes to searching, browsing, handling spam, etc.

There are lots of options for ways to go to a newer system -- you can continue to use a hosted solution (like you do now, since this forum is on invisition.net), or install some free forum software locally on heatinghelp.com.

Anyway, i just wanted to offer my help in setting it up as a way of giving back to the community, since this is something i have experience with.

Maybe it's not something you are ready to do now, but if at some point you start to get inundated by spam or start to wish you had a better forum system, let me know.

That is the perfect example... good Lord, what were they thinking... Thanks, Terry. I feel like an accomplished web master... even if I think HTML stands for Heating Tar Makes Liquid or something...

Hopefully all the bookmarks will work in new system

Dan, funny I find the mechanics of this forum to be the best I've ever seen. love to see what you have planned. But please give us notice if all the bookmark links won't work anymore so we'll have time to download them into pdfs. A world of knowledge in there.

    Thanks,

    David

Not yet sure what we're going to have,

but I would download any bookmarks for sure, David. It will be a new start.

it would be nice if the colors changed giving more information.
for instance, if i have not read any part of a thread, it would be blue.
if i have read part of a thread, it would be green.
if i have read the whole thing, then it would be blue.
a little clarity for the confused?
also would like catagories for threads:
    steam
    hot water
    misc. to the trade
    other..obits good causes etc.

  • the \"new\" wall

let's have a way to register types of system-especially steam.
i would like to know how many systems are still in use out there.
obviously the register should come up prominently on a google search.
not only would this information be useful for advertisers [who support the wall], but also for system owners. then they would know that they "are not alone"!--nbc

How about sub categories of the wall, maybe a

Proffesional Q&A forum maybe 1 for steamhead and 1 for water, HO forum for ??, general gripe area. Recall & safety warning area?? Maybe an emergency technical area that has no complaining, no grandstanding but a place to hopefully post quick questions and get quick constructive suggestions or answers from either one of us or maybe from factory reps. How does one download bookmarks? Just cut & paste into word? I did not see that option under options...

    once you've opened the bookmark

you should be able to save it as a pdf (at least you can with a Mac.) I go to print, then instead of printing I save it as a pdf.

I'm sure it's going to take alot of us a long time to download all the bookmarks we've saved; wish there was another way. Hope Dan can save it in some form.

it would be nice to have a couple day notice

to save stuff from the current site. (no time like the last minute!)

and it would be real nice to have the current forum archived in some fashion that could be accessed & searched.

not only will we have Dead Men but a Dead Forum.

    searchable archive?

Any chance the "old Wall" can be kept as a read-only, searchable archive? Seen this done when forums go to new systems. Works well. So, so much info here that is worthy of preservation, random access, and recovery.

    Thanks.
  • bookmarks??

i'm not sure what "bookmarks" are being talked about here.
as long as i can still do a key-word, or author search of the old postings here, i should still have access to all i need.
some thought should be given to those people accessing the wall on the road with i-phones or blackberries. too many graphics could slow them down.
the audi site i visited had so many pictures of cars[and girlfriends] with each posting that it took a long time for my 256K dsl.--nbc

bookmarks are what you put on your computer

to save a particular thread. when you call it up it goes online to heatinghelp and finds the thread for you. The search function calls up threads based on the keywords as you say. But if all the prior threads are removed from the Wall, neither one's bookmarks or the search function will work.

The same thing happened with Firedragon--who I believe gave his archive to hvacprotech who likely haven't yet put it up; same happened with Oil Tech Talk and alot of valuable threads are now unavailable--though hopefully still archived somewhere.

I recall Alan Mercurio seeking funding for maintaining the archives online (as a dead archive, non-postable). Probably costs a certain amount to store the info. In the case of the Wall, the amount of info must be 100X larger.

Perhaps if Dan let us know how much it might take to keep the archive alive/inactive--and still connected to all our personal bookmarks--we could have an annual year-end fund drive to keep it going. I don't think many Wallies have yet read this thread and many would be chagrined to lose their bookmarks which is a great reference tool. Probably books' work of material in 'the collected posts' of various Wallies.

If we had a team of interns to comb through all the archives and sort out all the topics and info they'd find a trove of useful nuggets (and mother lodes) of posts, amidst many posts that are simply entertaining. I'd hate to see all that lost. Maybe we could get back the OTT and Firedragon posts too. Maybe there's grant money available for the indexing of this kind of archive. There's alot of redundancy to be sure, but that's to be expected. I can understand the sheer huge cyber memory RAM involved in keeping the full archive operational, but perhaps there's another solution.
