If your going to have a heated seat, it might as well squirt water and blow dry too

    Heating with a Toilet

I have a tiny bathroom in my house that is cut off from sources of heat and most air exchange with the rest of the house. This bathroom gets a little chilly during the depths of winter. It occurred to me that I could route hot water to the toilet during the winter to provide a little radiant heat to the room. It's probably not the greatest solution but it would be cheap and easy to install a couple of valves and some tubing.

Does anyone know of a downside to this idea?

    Don't do that.

None of the toilet parts are made to work with hot water and they will become misshapen quickly. You can also melt the wax seal on the floor flange.
I've seen it happen when there is a cross connection in a building.

Think about getting a little strip of electric baseboard element.

    'waste' of energy

The toilet is double wall and would not radiate much at all, and the water is not very hot unless many consecutive flushes brought hot water to the toilet. Also, warm toilet lets bacteria breed more quickly. Best solution is electric heater plugged in, or hard wired from line run on outside of house.

    Radiant Floor

No one mentioned electric radiant floor grid. Time and place for everything and I think this might be the place.
  • or do what we do...

While up in the cabin without electric and indoor plumbing, in northeast Minnesota, we keep the spare toilet seat warm by hanging it above the wood burning stove. Its a real blessing to be able to read the whole heating.help article in one sitting out in the outhouse during new year's eve, at one time, its was 10 below..

    The toilet

shouldn't condense water vapor in the summer. :)

I imagine the tank would help heat the room, but I think it'd kill me to heat DHW and fire it down the terlit.

I like the idea of hanging your seat above the kitchen range to warm it up. Thanksgivng day with all the cooking and users, it oughta be pretty.....uh... nice? ;)

    Happy Thanksgiving.

    For Mr. Bennett:

On a remodel job years ago, we were running behind schedule, Dad ran the water lines to the second floor bath, piped hot water to the toilet. The trap in the bowl shattered, sending water all over the floor, and down thru the ceiling...I laughed my butt off!..Dad was not amused tho.
