Clanking when cooling?

That's a great idea, thanks, I'll try it. Yes, they're on an old hardwood floor and it stands to reason that there's a substantial "creep" across the length of the thing with a temperature range like this.
You're lucky you didn't play tuba! Imagine ...)

    Clanking when cooling?

Haven't seen this one mentioned before, maybe someone can help. Single pipe steam system, ancient Victorian radiators, all heats up great and is very quiet when heating. But ... when it cools down, several radiators clang once or twice per cycle like they're being hit with a ball-peen hammer. Two on the first floor, at least one on the second.
Any ideas what to do? Thanks!

have the same problem, but i have a hot water system, The radiators, column type, will bang as as long as 2 hours after the thermostat is satisfied.

  • If it's not on carpet, the radiator legs might be sticking to the floor and making noise as the radiator expands and contracts. You could try slipping something thin and slippery under the feet . . . like discs cut from a plastic milk jug. I used Delrin guitar picks under one of mine (I had a bunch on-hand.) and it did the trick for me.
