steam boiler feed line

We just replaced a steam boiler and had to make some changes on the return piping. When we piped the make-up supply feed into the return they placed the tee above the water line of the boiler on the vertical return line on a gravity feed.

return feed
probably would be best to connect it under the waterline on the return, so that when skimming you avoid water-hammer.
i would also suggest a spring-loaded shower valve for the feed so you can't accidentally leave it open [ask me why that happens!]--nbc0 -
I agree 100%
Connection below the waterline is the way, especially if automatic but manual as well.
Connection above the waterline, especially if automatic feeding, is asking for trouble that your neighbors' neighbors will call you about.
Good idea on the spring-loaded valve. I like "idiot-proof"! Just that R&D never ceases and they are always coming out with new and better idiots.0 -
huh?
Who are "they" and why are "they" doing steam heat work? you do NOT dump make-up water in above the water line as flash steam is created. Make them see the association "waterline.... make up water" why would the make up "water" be above the "water"line? Lowbid process will find allcomers. Anyone else willing to lose the job or to lose money to do the job correctly? Bid it to do it right, let the mistakes be someone elses...do not find your work on someones wall of shame.0
