Drips for steam mains..BP

flows downhill as you say, what would remove the condensate from it?

Unless it was properly sized for counterflow, I would definitely put in a drip trap assembly. 1/2" or 3/4" F&T at least, if low pressure. An Inverted Bucket type if higher than 15 PSI.

  • how far

I have a system with a newer 3 inch steam main 75 feet long that runs downhill from the boiler header . It has no takeoffs and then just feeds a 2 inch one pipe steam main that will drip back to the boiler water line. Does this 75 foot line need a drip. I can repipe the connetion from the 3 to the 2 so the condensate can just flow from the 3 inch main into the 2 inch main. All the mains will be insulated, so we are mainly just dealing with startup condensate. The 2 inch line feeds about 350 EDR.

  • Clarification......

the 3 inch line runs downhill away from the boiler and then can flow into the 2 inch line that flows downhill back to the boiler return.

  • It would probably work OK

but if there is a way to drip that 75-footer, I would. If anything happens to increase the amount of condensate in it, it might bang at the transition if not dripped.
