Slant/Fin Intrepid Gas-fired Steamer (Gordo & Steamhead)

was with the bolt-on air restrictor in place and with the standard orifice (not the lower-rate one that comes in the bag). IIRC this combination is good for an input rate of 100,000 to 150,000 BTUH according to the manual. We set it for 125,000 BTUH (Slant/Fin says down-firing the boiler is not a problem). I don't seem to recall where the actual gas pressure ended up, but the regulator was maxed out as received and we turned it back quite a bit.
Like you, I think Midco has done a good job with this burner, and I'm sure we'll use it again. But that Fenwal ignition module is one more control we'll have to stock. Oh well..... speaking of Fenwals, were you able to come up with a replacement for those used on Midco DS burners?

We keep forgetting to take \"before\" pics
the old boiler was a 4-section Crane #20, dry base all-fuel 3-pass from the late 1940s I think, with a Beckett AF burner upgrade. Smith couldn't deliver our usual G-8 and Carlin EZ-Gas in time. We turned to Slant/Fin, having heard they had certified their Intrepid line with power gas burners.
Their response was amazing. We called them on a Friday, and they found a TR-30-PZ boiler in stock at the warehouse that could ship the following Monday. They also arranged with their local Midco rep, MJD Combustion Sales, for an EC-200 burner (they've certified the Intrepid line with the Carlin EZ-Gas, HeatWise SU and the Midco EC series power gas burners). We had the burner the next day, and the boiler arrived on Wednesday. Here's a pic of it, naked from its trip down the narrow stairs, with the 3-inch steam header done.

Steaming!
The EC-200 tuned up really nicely, about the same numbers as one would expect from an EZ-Gas. And I think it's a bit quieter too. Here's my esteemed partner Gordo, imitating the guy in the Slant/Fin ads.
Chimney relining was handled by "All About Chimneys". There is only one steam main and it got a Gorton #2 instead of a pipe plug.
Many thanks to:
Bob Flanagan and Joe Coppola at Slant/Fin
Ray Bazzani at MJD Combustion Sales
Carl Anderson, Jotham Hyatt, "Champ" and the delivery crew at Ferguson's main Baltimore branch
And anyone else who helped make this happen on such short notice, and whose name I forgot to write down.

An Intrepid gas we did a year ago
Steamhead suggested I post this. This is a 6 section firing at 300,000 input with gas using a Wayne burner. The burner performs ok, but I am not especially happy as it runs loud and somewhat rough and the flame appears to sit way back in the boilers big chamber (about 21 inches deep), making the boiler run much hotter in the back than the front. I had to install a target wall as the flame appeared to be just licking the back wall since CO levels were slightly elevated. Once I did that the CO levels were just fine. This unit is a perfect match to the system where we swapped out radiators and removed many to get the one radiators's capacity in line with current heat loads. It takes about 15 to 2o minutes for the mains to heat up from dead cold, but once going, things heat evenly, and the boiler never goes off on pressure, even during recovery from 52F setback (this is a church). All the radiators, except where the thremostat is located, are equipped with TRV's and adjustable air vents so heating is even during setback and when occupied. The TRV's remain at comfort settings and the programmable thermostat setbacks back the whole system. Once the system heats up the pressure holds steady for hours at 1 3/4 psi. SWEET!!
The TT Prestige in the background took over duties heating the lower level with a new heating system composed of panel rads with TRV's feed by a one pipe divertor tee network overhead. Setback is accomplished here through the Prestige's controls and an added timeclock.

What did you fire the
EC burner at and what was the gas pressure?. I am impressed with the specs on this burner and its being able to be fired at very low gas pressure. Did you use the add on air distributer on the front of the burner?0 -
Very nice job guys
We installed that gas gun in an existing Peerless a few months ago . I was very impressed by how quiet it ran . Good work Frank and Gordo .0 -
I like that EC-200
burner, although I do want to look at it a little further for high end application.
It can run on some pretty low gas pressures which was one of the things that made the old E-20 burners so great.0 -
Hey Timmie,......
Have you seen the PF x4m literature yet. I just got off the phone with them and they now have a 10 to 1 downturn model....40,000 to 400,000 input....Sweeet.
