steam boiler water treatment

My new single pipe megasteam is up and running well. The installer had added an emulsifier compound that tuned the water green to dissolve the oil. After running for a few days, I drained/flushed it all out while boiler was hot.

The water in the sight glass still has a very thin layer of gunk on top. Level bounces about 1/2 inch during operation.

Should I bother adding any chemicals to the water as a form of maintenance? There is a hercules boiler treatment product available locally that contains cyclohexamine. Turns water yellow and stays in the system.

Am I better off with just leaving it with plain water or would the chemical help me out in the long run, rust inhibitor and so forth. I appreciate any thoughts on this.
