This is
a gas company install from a few years back. The complaint was pilot keeps snuffing-out on the flame rod.
RV leaked so long he fashioned-up a bucket and garden-hosed it to a floor drain.
HX plugged, F/S closed constant, no c/a,,,etc.,etc....
H/O says "can you just get-it operating properly(cheaply), to tied us over?"
Sheesh!

This is
about (aboot) the fifth photo series you posted, Dave, where the circulator is almost as large as the boiler... What is it with that? Must be a Canadian thing, eh?
EDIT: Please see be-low... I am reflecting on what Dave sees too often and am VERY happy to read his posts. This is meant as supportive. Sorry if it was taken otherwise

OK Bradford
just day to day stuff I see up here, figured it would perhaps be a plus as I thought most liked pics.
And Matt wondered why I seldom do,, go figure!
Sorry,, I wont again.

Dave,
you really don't know Brad.
He wouldn't insult my mother-in-law, even if he knew her.
Now, I don't know you so maybe your being just as humorous as Brad but it is hard to tell.
Keep those pictures coming.

I wasn`t being humorous, and I don`t know Brad personally, although I always enjoy his one-liners,, sometimes I take them offensively(as I`m sure he intends).
If I`m not wanted here, this Canadian will bow-out.
Dave0 -
Dave,
I don't know Brad either but I've never read a post from him that was meant to offend. I read his post as kidding a friend - not hurtful. Do yourself a favor and get that chip off your shoulder - life's too short.0 -
Pix & comments
Dave...Keep cool, I see lots of the same here in BC (Canada). I am sure Brad would have similar comments if I posted pix. Problem is, building inspection is poor to non-existent, & we have to cope with the fall-out.0 -
ps
Chip on my shoulder?
Brad & I have communicated a few times off the wall. I know he is a great fellow, and I shouldn`t have taken things too personally.
Did you ever "just get tired?" The joys of internet communication.
BTW-kaBkequeDen , I have a sister in BC, Clearbrook to be exact.

One of Those Days
Dave,
Glad to hear it's OK, now. I was having one of those days too. Hang in there & I hope you keep posting.0 -
I dunno, I was a bit shocked when I read Brad's comment, mainly *because* he's usually a very nice guy. Lord knows, we see enough pictures of stuff like pumps on returns and copper steam mains here on the Wall but no one says must be an American thing. I saw it as an unnecessary dig. Hackery transcends international boundaries.0 -

You just reading something into Brad's remark that just isn't there!
Brad is a tremendous asset to this board and is always there with good expert advice and goes out of his way to help others solve their problems. He's a good guy! I don't know Brad`personally but have learned he is from the Boston area and that he has what is called a "New England dry sense of humor."
Typical New England humor:
Question: "Does this road go to Boston?"
Answer: "Nope, It stays right here!"
As my mother's family is from Maine, I've lived with New England humor all of my life and as a Canadian, I can understand where some remarks might be misinterpreted.
However, I just don't see derogatory meaning in this case.
I appreciated Dave's pictures as it shows that "mickey mouse" is found everywhere and not just in my business.
(Please note: I spelled the word "humour" without the "U" so Americans would be able to read my post!0 -
Whoa!
Just saw this expanded thread, what did I miss??
Point of clarification, it is ALWAYS in good fun. Often irreverent, never dis-respectful. I always love the pics.
But if one has to explain.... the joke was missed. Here it is:
I recall Dave posting some pics of things he ran into in his travails, praying that the Owners wanted more than a band-aid.
On many of those, there was a circulator he found that was HUGE, guaranteed condensing at those flow rates. (That or the boilers were very tiny...)
Dave, being the guy that he is, wants to elevate his clients to achieve at least sanity, rightly complained that his client0 -
Hey Bradford,
Thanks for the PM!
Ya, I get funny sometimes & read the intent the wrong way, don`t we all at times?
As I said, internet communication will do that!
Besides, you don`t get rid of me that easily, unless our gracious host says so!
Still enjoy your one-liners, and hopefully my "wit" will catch you,,, when it does, please consider it even! LOL.

Internet Communication
Ya know it is not easy and often difficult to get the tone of the conversation off of the page (monitor). The words have meaning sure, but they do not have the inflection of the spoken word (voice). The other item missing is the facial expression and the associated body language that accompanies it. It's like handcuffing someone with Italian heritage and asking them to explain something in detail. It's just not going to be the same. I have a hard time some days just trying to understand the gist of things.

I hear ya,,, I`m sure most understand(not easy at times)LOL!

Yes, is that circ
a B&G HV model? Looks way too big for that little Laars....
Tell us about the rest of the system.... baseboard, iron?

Hey Frank,
How did you "sneak-in" there?
The system is F/T/BB & S25,,,just spoke with her tonight, not sure about my price to repair.
I told her I don`t do "quick-fixes", this has been a prob from the get-go. Short of that(in so many words), see ya!

Brad
we gotta use dem bigun pumps, cuz its soo cold up here, we gotta get that hot water to where its goin fast, so that it dont loose all its heat on the way ther!

What'd ya say?
Well are you gonna get 'em going? Looks like its not piped correctly, should be primary/secondary or the very least a by pass for a low mass boiler. You'll have to clean the heat exchanger if it's clogged. You're not getting a good flame with the clogged HE and the pilot is losing its rectification. I usually charge 3 hours labor to clean the exchanger. I usually pull the burners and tear off the draft diverter and top and hose out the coil, I don't like breathing that stuff. After that, by the time you repipe and pump, replace the expansion and 30 pounder, they'd be better of replacing. Give them a price both ways and let them decide.0 -
'Cause I'm good
;-)
Not sure what the pressure drop across that Laars HX is, but it can't be enough to warrant a circ that can pump 35 GPM against a 7-foot head. Call Laars' tech support and talk to Noel- he'd know.
With ordinary baseboard, I've found as so many others have, that you don't need a lot of flow to make it heat well. We typically set up 3-zone baseboard systems using cast-iron boilers, with Taco 570-series zone valves and a single Grundfos 15-42 or Taco 005 or 007 circ, depending on the loop lengths. This gives us a respectable supply/return ∆T. If you're doing pri-sec, you'd either use VERY small individual circs or one secondary circ and the ZVs as described above.

darn it Dave the installers must have moved to my end of Mass. ANd they work for our gas companies here. Now I have offended the gas workers I am sure. There the heat is off of Brad now.Cost is what you spend , value is what you get.

Been walking away from alot of those lately
They do not want to pay for good equipment.
They do want you to put your ticket on the line.

Man that's ugly. Yeah I would say that pump is a tad over
sized. Or maybe it's a very large building, yeah that's the ticket. 1000 ft of baseboard, monoflow. yeah. Tim0
