There's usually a bit of slack in the pipes. Just be slow and cautious when you do the shimming and you should be okay.

There is water hammer when heat comes on seemingly closely related to these two (2 pipe) steam radiators in my condo unit (29 units in building) . There is significant floor settling by these two radiators and a level reveals that they are leaning towards steam valve side and not towards steam trap side. Can I shimmy the low side up so they tilt correctly towards the trap side or might I do some damage like break pipes or connections?0 -
floor settling
you may have to raise the whole rad up so that the low spot in the pipe under the floor is pitched correctly. check the pitch [with a good magnetic pipe level] of that pipe first.even a small change in elevation can cause a "water pocket' trapping steam.--nbc0
