you need to have the installer redo the near boiler piping to get the proper pitch on the steam main

I recently had my steam boiler swapped out for a new one and I had a quick question regarding the pitching of the main. It is also a one pipe system. Does it matter if the main is pitched towards the boiler when it was pitched away from the boiler in the past? It has a dry return on the opposite end that also pitches back to the boiler. I had asked him before and he said that any water in the main would be pushed out when the system turns on.

I have been trying to quite some pretty severe steam hammer and I am wondering if this could be a problem.

    Thanks,
    Kevin

Was I correct in saying that the main needs to pitch away from the boiler and towards the return?

    Thanks,

    yes you are correct

  • Kevin- If you don't already have it. I would suggest you get Dan's book, "We got Steam Heat" (See "A Steamy Deal" at the bottom of this page)
Anyone with a steam heating system should get Dan's books especially if you are thinking of having work done on your system and /or a new boiler put in. They're easy reading and packed with information. They finally helped me straighten out my system which is now working properly and running more economically. They're one of the best investments I've ever made.
