Can I use Dresser couplings in a steam system?

Will Dresser couplings work in a one-pipe steam system? I need to move a pair of steam radiators for a client. To do so I'll have to cut the two inch main and install a new tees for the new locations. I can't have the system down for too long and am wondering about back-up plans if the existing pipe won't come apart readily. Thanks in advance for any and all advice and help.

In a pinch?
Yes, I've used them in a pinch.
They've got graphite ferrules/bushings and they make me nervous...but they did work over night.

But what about permanent? Will they make little traps of condensate and make it hammer?0 -
dresser
I fixed a pair of dresser couplings that were leaking a little on a 2 inch 1 pipe steam main for a customer a few months ago.It was for a 2x 1 1/4 tee for a radiator. They were installed in 1971.They leaked a little in 2008. I think that is pretty good for dresser couplings on low pressure steam. NO NEVER
maybe overnight or for a week...but thats it!! Definitely not on anything above 2 psi or any returns...ask me how I know. Mad Dog

i like the ones with the asbestos clad gaskets0 -
Yes I have
On both HW and low pressure steam. Pipe has to be clean though!0 -
How do yo know Mad dog? (Can't wait to hear this).0 -
Can't wait??????
I'll guess you'll have to! Very simply, put....as much as copper solder joints do not hold up to the constant expansion/contraction....dresser couplings will do the same thing...even though it could be years. Black screw pipe on the steam side always...Mad Dog

Dresser Couplings
We use Steam type Dressers in locations were client does not want to spend the $$$$ to do a proper repair with welding. These are on high and low pressure steam systems and underground. No failures to date. Many in place.0 -
dressser
Hi TJ What name brand dresser couplings do you buy that are suitable for high pressure? I am only familar with the run of the mill dresser couplings that I encountered on this residental small system that have been working for many years. I have used Vic Roustabout couplings on a 8 inch condenser water line with great sucess. What do you use?Idle hands are the devils workshop

There's a much better way
2" will always come apart one way or another. Worst case, Cut it close to the fitting, slice it by sticking the sawzall inside.then chisel it out. You just have to be careful not to hit the threads of the fitting. I do it all the time if I can't back it out. Then you will have to use a union. Much better than a dresser coupling though.
