Ultra 3

input. To answer questions: the steam rads were removed and baseboard was installed. The mixing valve is there for radiant floor warming in a second floor bath. Temp set at around 130 f. The bath was finished already so I used joist trak with a Tekmar floor sensor from underneath. So it looks like the mixing valve and circ needs to be repiped. Does anyone have a piping diagram for this. Thanks for the help.

Jim

    ???

What's that mixing valve doing ? Not much I bet. You need to pump away from it and use P/S piping or you'll get ghost flow.

    Otherwise, nice, neat job.

    it is piped

p/s... you arr right about the mix valve. you can't pump into the valve...most likely you will not get any flow.

    no

The boiler is P/S into the header. The distribution needs to be P/S off the header. S & R too far apart on a mixer won't work right. Been there, done that :)

    Nice Job !

I thought the mix valve was for the DHW.

    edit:
oops, just looked at the pics again, I agree, mix valve not pipe right.

Other question on pipe up, based on # of pumps up there

my guess is that you have 3 zones? If so, you will get ghost flow up the common return you have if you dont have separate returns w/ flow checks. Just a note of caution, don't ask me how I know this from many moons ago.
Edit: I see the separate returns but you may need to add flow checks on those. Other than that and the mix valve, very nice looking install. Tim

    Ultra Piping

Nice looking install jwp. but yes there's a couple issues.

1)The tees on the system header should have been closer together (3 pipe diameters) but it'll probably work fine like that. Into the header, off the header...tomato,tomahto

    2) I don't think you needed the flow check on the supply to the P/S tees if you left the checks in the Grunfoss zone circs but W/M does show it in their diagram

    3) With that piping arrangement you should put a flow check in the indirect loop or you will overheat the domestic water

    4) You NEED to install an expansion tank on the domestic water piping especially with a shutoff valve on the hot side. Tee it in between the cold valve and the tank. A check valve on the supply to the tank will keep hot water from gravitating up the cold pipe during long DHW off cycles

4)The mixing valve needs to be repiped here's a sketch

I hope this helps. It's nice to get opinions from all of us "been there done that's". Keeps you from the callbacks.
