PEX was approved for use in ground loops at the October IGSHPA (International Ground Source Heat Pump Association) conference in Nashville. I haven't had a chance to look into it much, but I don't see why PEX would not be a good application. It is more expensive, but as Zac mentioned, it works great for radiant floor, so there's no reason why it wouldn't work great for ground loops.

Have you seen this from REHAU?
RAUGEO Ground Source System0 -
yes
I have insalled one manifold and will be using more on a couple of upcoming jobs but not the pipe, the drillers supply their own and wrinkle their nose at the mention of using pex for vertical loops, they are concerned that with all the recent regulation changes in the geo industry that it would not be approved. we all know that pex is far superior to HDPE in every way but if the powers that be don't see the right number on it it might as well be garden hose. Regardless of the pipe I like having the ability to balance and isolate each loop to accommodate differing loop lengths etc. We do it with radiant, why not geo where it's infinitely more critical?0
