    Heat loss

Doing a heat loss is probably the best way to start on determining what size boiler is needed. Is the boiler only being changed?

  • Measuring the existing

radiation will get you somewhere in the ballpark as to rough sizing, but water temp governs the actual output of each rad.
Decipher the 2, and you`ll come-up with the water temperature needed.
As Joe suggests, a real heatloss calculation is required for any sizing accuracy.

then measuring the radiation is the proper way.

If it's hot-water, do the heat-loss. You will likely be able to install a smaller boiler, as many currently installed boilers are horribly oversized. Click on Resources at the top of this page, then Heat Loss Calcs and follow the instructions to download (if you have broadband) or order the CD (recommended if you still have dial-up) the free Slant/Fin calc program that will run on any Windows computer. I've even gotten this to run on Ubuntu Linux.
