Just tell me its safe

nothing wrong there... (rolling eyes)

The pricelss story reminded me of my favorite auto dealership owner. Quoted him $1X,000 for two new furnaces to replace the neglected pieces o' crap he had handling his showroom. Nope, no go. Two weeks later he spent $16,000 on a new motor for his BOAT! Serious lack of priorities. Of course, he inherited the whole shebang from daddy so what did it matter? Needless to say, Ford took his franchise away and now his lot is empty and I imagine so is his wallet.

    Home owners and there boilers

been doing the pre season check thing. Once again and I have posted on this before. I am called in t see 40 plus year old garbage with scorch marks up the front, antique controls poor venting issues. In some cases see scorch marks from the logs melting the back sides of the jacket.

The H.O. says can you just check it to be safe and tell me I will get through the winter.

I say no you need a new boiler!

They say cant afford one (nice expensive neighborhood and two new suv's or similar in the driveway)just want to get through this winter.

I say sorry not putting my ticket on saying this is OK.

It amazes me the people that want piece of mind but will not pay. And the people that spent there last penny to buy a house they could not afford then have a health safety issue and want us work a miracle with a boiler that's time has come.

Just a rant of frustration thanks for your time.

  • Daily occurances,

that I too will never understand.
Thank God not everyone`s like that.
Cheer-up Mitch, today is the beginning of rest of your life.

  • Cheap piece of mind...

Sell them 6 good CO detectors. That way you AND they can sleep at night. And if everything goes to hell in a hand basket, you at least covered your hind end with paper to ward off the bites of their lawyers.

You can lead a horse to water, but....

  • 6 good CO detectors and,,,

a few smoke detectors as well. Just went through this with my buddy and his little round 45 yo American Standard boiler. If the recommendations for the alarms doesn't ring a bell for them, nothing will. I also wrote a strongly worded letter as to the lack of safety of his system, gave him one copy and put a copy in his records as well. CYA as best you can.

    Scorch marks

Found a good one. First clue was boiler leaning over in tight closet, straining the pipes. Scorch marks where the door jam had turned to charcoal. Not approved for installation on combustible floor. A piece of tin underneath had burned away the floor, the legs fell thru and the cast iron was now straddling a floor joist.

Mark..And what happens when an deaf person does not "Hear" the Alarm ??

I Had one of these too:

Audi TT just sitting in the Garage full of dust:$50K

    Street Bike: $12k

    Sound System:$30k

    Ski equipment $12K

    New Bar:$15K

    (New Heating system Priceless?)

His Girl friend had to go to the Hospital last year for CO Poisoning!

yet an new system for $14K is TO MUCH !(Will not change it)

At this point i do not want to replace the system even if he wanted me to..

Have been Talking to an Lawyer about this and want to just "COVER my butt"..

Should i call the fire department/Bldg office too? so they can Red tag it?

He will think that i am just doing this to "Get back" for not signing an Contract!

Just looking out for the safety...
  • I am not a lawyer....

nor have I played one on TV, but I have swam with sharks (lawyers) and can tell you that you can not cover your butt in enough paper to fend off the bites.

Just remember this, if it has to go to a jury trial, you will be playing to the jurors. And they have this unique ability to see through the BS that the lawyers are laying down, so do the best you can to document everything in writing, and if at all possible, get the consumer to sign the agreement for acknowledgement.

Some law dawgs could probably chew right through that as well, but remember, you have to impress the jury.

Offered low level alarms since he new of the issue but

would not take. Insisted on his Night Hawk that I showed him had a 17 ppm in memory. I cleared the code for him. My personal TSI co alarm was mostly 0 in the house however standing directly in front of the boiler during lite off I would get that quick roll out that sucked back in. The personal alarm if held directly over the boiler would get a quick spike and go to Zero. I showed him this and said ya I can take your 41+ year old boiler apart and try to put it back together, you may have the same problem when I am done and you still have no spill or roll out protection.

Asked me how fixable I said dont know till I start and you may still need a new boiler when I am done want me to try.

No I do not want to run up a bill if it may not be fixable or may force me to change the boiler.

How about a new boiler? NO

I am not trying to make money on this I do not even have time to do the boiler and will have to refer you to a larger company how about a new boiler. NO

How about three of my Nice NCI low level alarms? No I will use what I have and check it.

Your UL listed device had once found 17 ppm and did not even tell you? I will just watch it and clear the code as needed.

I documented several times on the invoice replacement recommended but how many times I have stated an issue in writing the bill gets paid there is a problem later on I said Ya it was in writing that would happen didn't you read it on the bill. The reply is always I just saw the total and paid it did not bother reading the description.

I am sure they are going someplace nice for vacation.

    How about
