Amtrol WHT11 Cleaning???

I have a 10 year old Amtrol and was told that the best way to clean it out was to unscrew the top fitting and put clr inside for several hours, then to flush the unit out for a while until everything is out. The issue is the this is a 41 gallon unit and it just doesnt seem to get very good heat transfer when making hot water, seems to take 10 minutes + for one degree of gain so basically if you fill a tub thats it, and it doesnt regenerate quickyl at all. I drained it from the bottom and was surprised to see very fine sediment and figured if I was going to clean it, I may as well do the gallon of CLR in there too before flushing it. Thank you

Wand.
I have made a cleaning wand out of a 20" supply tube by cripming the end. The tube is small enough to fit in the top fitting. I hook it up to a hose and use it like a power washer to clean the gunk off the coil.
I do not use that brand anymore.
