  • High Quality Teflon Tape

and high temp RTV silicone! Totally non-traditional, but it works.

  • Together?

    You're using them together?
  • We use

Teflon tape and paint yellow Rectorseal over the tape . On anything larger than 1 inch ( except steam ) we coat the inner threads of every fitting also . I'll have to agree , the quality if fittings and nipples are going steadily down . But the only area we see leak from time to time is a nipple or male adapter connected directly into a circ flange . It has more to do with paint on the threads of the flange . To fix that we heat it up with the torch and can get almost 2 full turns while it's still hot .

I'd like to know what's been working for people who use larger pipe sizes - 3 inch and over ? We've had problems using the same products and the same methods for the larger sizes .
  • What order...

Silcone, tape, silicone; tape, silcone; silicone, tape; ?

I've also been having good luck with megaloc. Doesn't do any good for nipples threaded cock eyed, though, which seem to be about half of whats out there. Its too bad, when the Chinese first entered the local market big time, everything was straight and threads looked like they were polished. Now, a year later, they are just as bad as the domestic stuff that was being stocked locally previously.

    AARGG!!~!

    Thread Sealant

I use pretty much the same as Ron Jr. I put about five wraps of the thin teflon tape on the male threads and then coat with Rector Seal #5 or Gasoila. Anything over 1 1/4" I coat the female threads per manufacturers instuctions. Cheap insurance for no leaks. Painted or rusted threads I have a fitting brush cut off to fit in my cordless drill and spin it clean. Ron - For large fittings 3" or over "Expando" thread sealant works excellent. It comes as a powder that you actually mix with water and apply with a flux brush or equal. Guaranteed no leaks!!
