purging air from system

I am trying to get steam to some remote radiators in an old building we just purchased. When I open the vent to help purge the air it sucks at least as much if not more air than it purges. What going on. I am woried I am creating more air blocks somehow.

  • Open the vent?

I would think the vent would be always open if steam.
Are you sure you don`t have hot-water heat?

Yes I am sure it is steam.
  • things to do today..

    i suggest you:
1.order dans steam book from this site.the cost of it will probably be returned to you in savings in the first month!
2.search under find a steam pro in your area, for someone, who can get this system at least up and running, for the cold sure to follow soon.
3.take pix of the boiler & piping, so that when you have specific questions down the line, you can post them here.also write down any boiler information such as make and model no. and capacity [btu + edr].
prepare yourself for a most exciting adventure as [with the help here] you oversee the rebirth of your system--

    quieter than ever.

    more economical than before.

all from the synergy obtained here!!--nbc

  • Is it a single pipe steam system? (Hint-If a radiator has one pipe attached,it's a single pipe system. Two pipes =two pipe system.) I would also recommend Dan's books. (See "A Steamy Deal" at the bottom of the page) Easy reading and packed with information on steam systems and understanding one. I was completely in the dark about steam heating until I read them. They're a "must" if you own a steam system.

If your allowance only covers one book, get "We got Steam Heat". It's a good place to start.
